About Me

[scroll down for upcoming exhibits and Press]

I'm SHUNGABOY. I create vibrant paintings of male ballet dancers, surrealist male cityscapes, handsome portraits, and homoerotic landscapes.

My work grows out of my figure drawing practice. I believe that the male physique is the most beautiful thing in the world, and I want to overcome the homophobia that pervades society.

BIO

Born in the Hell's Kitchen, New York City, his earliest childhood drawings were plein air crayon drawings of castles in the English countryside. He graduated with a bachelor’s in architecture from Cornell University. His career in architecture included establishing the Tokyo office of a major US architectural firm and later managing the construction of museums in New York City.

In 2002, he left architecture to seek out his own creative spirit. While as a volunteer archivist at the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation (now the Leslie-Lohman Museum), he started attending the foundation’s male figure drawing group and in 2014 started his own Men’s Naked Drawing Group, which during the pandemic became Men Drawing Men.

IS THERE A MEANING BEHIND THE NAME SHUNGABOY? “Shunga,” is the erotic art genre of 17th century Japan that depicted explicit sexual scenes (often brothel scenes) in woodblock prints. The word "shun" (Spring) connotes sex and "ga" means art. Shungaboy, the name he uses for his art, celebrates both his Japanese descent and the playful spirit he attempts to capture his creative work.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Originals (one-of-a-kind art) AND prints of my work are available on this website.
